Clean your jewelry. Water, cloth, silver… we tell you everything!

It’s time to clean your costume jewelry! Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, anklets or body chains, you love to wear them to enhance your looks. Whatever the season, your silver, gold-plated, stainless steel or natural stone accessories will match your outfits and give them a glamorous touch. But they can lose their shine and oxidize over time. So how do you bring back the shine to your costume jewelry? We reveal our most effective tips!

What is costume jewelry?

Contrary to what one might think, costume jewelry is not necessarily synonymous with mass production. On the contrary, many brands rely on custom manufacturing to create unique pieces. The term fantasy is used to highlight the original and very creative aspect of this type of jewelry. This is what distinguishes them from classic jewelry: their shapes are often more unusual and their colors more vivid and varied.

The designer of costume jewelry uses stainless steel, brass, gold plated, silver, natural and semi-precious stones. These materials, more economical than gold and precious stones, make it possible to create quality pieces that are both accessible and original.

Very trendy, costume jewelry comes in a thousand shapes and colors. From necklaces, to ankle chains, to eyeglass chains, there is something for everyone! They are the perfect fashion ally for all fashionistas who love to change their look every day. There’s nothing better than varying the pleasures and matching your jewelry (and your moods!) to your outfits.

Baking soda to clean your costume jewelry

Baking soda has a special place in our grandmothers’ cupboards. Natural, cheap and non-polluting, this product has many virtues for our health and for the maintenance of the house. But not only! Baking soda is also perfect for maintaining your costume jewelry. It allows to clean them gently and to give them back all their brightness. Here’s how to do it:

  • Take a large bowl and pour in a cup of about 250 ml of hot water;
  • Add one to two teaspoons of baking soda;
  • Mix well and place your jewel inside;
  • Let it soak for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse it with cold water;
  • Then dry it gently with a clean cloth.

Whether it is to polish a pair of earrings, a necklace or a bracelet, this technique is particularly effective.

To give shine to its natural pearl jewelry with water and soap

The natural pearl jewelry seduce for their bohemian chic and ultra trendy. Made of mother-of-pearl, freshwater, glass or rock stones, they enhance beach looks and summer outfits. In order to maintain their beauty, it is important to take care of them regularly. Indeed, pearls and natural stones can tarnish over time and lose their shine.

If you have natural stone bracelets or similar accessories, the solution for cleaning your costume jewelry is very simple:

  • Soak a cloth in cold water;
  • Add a few drops of mild soap. For mother-of-pearl beads, choose a black soap;
  • Rub gently until you are satisfied with the result.

Cleaning blackened silver jewelry with lemon

As you may have noticed, silver jewelry that has been left in the open air for several days or weeks tends to change color. No more shine and hello oxidation.

We explain how to restore the shine of your silver accessories.

Why does money go black?

Don’t panic, the black spots that appear on your silver jewelry are related to a natural and reversible phenomenon. Indeed, it is simply a chemical reaction: air and humidity tend to oxidize the metal, which reacts by producing silver sulfide.

How to clean silver jewelry?

While baking soda is very effective for cleaning silver jewelry, lemon is an equally good option:

  • Fill a bowl or basin with hot water;
  • Add whole lemon juice;
  • Soak your silver necklaces, bracelets, chains or rings;
  • Take a toothbrush moistened with lemon juice and scrub your jewelry. If that’s not enough, feel free to add baking soda or white vinegar.

Cleaning gold plated: we bet on the toothpaste!

Gold plating has the advantage of being much less expensive than pure gold. It is made on a brass base, which is an alloy of copper and zinc. Then, the jewelry is dipped in gold. The golden accessories seduce by their elegance. Declined in necklaces and earrings, they bring light to your face. Worn as body jewelry, bangles, bracelets or rings, they give a bohemian chic touch to your look and enhance your tanned skin in summer.

So why the toothpaste? Because it contains abrasive agents that clean and shine without damaging. To restore the shine to your favorite pieces of costume jewelry, simply use a moistened toothbrush with a little toothpaste. Then, gently rub your jewelry. Finally, rinse with cold water and dry immediately. You will be able to enjoy all the glamour of your golden ornaments again!

To go further: how to maintain and make your costume jewelry last?

Store your jewelry carefully

Your costume jewelry, just like your favorite fashion accessories, deserves to be pampered! To prevent oxidation, dust deposits and knots, it is best to store them in small individual pouches and in a jewelry box. Ideally, necklaces with pendants, chokers and long necklaces should be hung on hooks.

Avoid wearing costume jewelry on a daily basis

Be sure to alternate between them to preserve their life span as much as possible. Except for silver, costume jewelry is not meant to be worn every day. Indeed, their materials are more fragile and more likely to suffer from daily aggressions!

Protect your necklaces and bracelets from perfume

Remember to put on perfume before putting on your jewelry, especially your necklaces, earrings and bracelets. And for good reason, perfume contains alcohol and can change their color or appearance.

Avoid direct contact of your fancy accessories with water

Are you going to take a shower? Remove your costume jewelry. Going for a dip at the beach? Keep them dry to protect them from salt. Yes, it is important not to get your jewelry (too) wet in order to preserve its shine.

Clean your jewelry frequently

Regular, gentle cleaning is essential. Use a soft cloth or special jewelry cloth. Dry rub to remove perspiration, perfume or cream residue. It’s a habit to get into, but it will help you keep your costume jewelry longer!
